Fitness is a Choice

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning, said this in reference to our ability to choose our attitudes in any given set of circumstances. Fitness is a choice; I have proven this to myself.

The picture above illustrates my original journey with P90X Classic. After this 90 period, I was in the best shape of my life. I had never seen my abdominal muscles during my 28 years on this planet. Every day physical movements that we take for granted like getting out of bed, bending over to pick something up or even standing on your tip toes to reach for something up high have all become much easier. Just for kicks, I even went back to the gym to do the “same old” workouts I had used to. I could jump higher, run faster and lift heavier. It’s difficult to understand if you have never experienced this before. The “same old” workouts I had been doing in the gym had become effortless to me. My overall physical performance as a human being had increased dramatically. This happened by no accident. I had chosen to improve my health and P90X was the vehicle I used to accomplish this. Never having been this fit before, my attitude somewhat changed for the worse. After all, I was a fat guy for a few years and I wanted to enjoy my new body.

Fit and Arrogant

Now being a fit guy, I thought that I could coast and maintain my level of fitness by squeezing in a P90X workout here and there and eating moderately well. With this lackadaisical mindset, I made a series of bad choices. I lost some of the discipline I had gained with P90X and allowed myself to eat unhealthier foods more often. If you read my about me page, you know that I love to eat fast food. Especially after a long night of drinking…man can I put some Taco Bell away. Oh yeah, I drank a lot too. What can I say, I like to party. Things started to head south…

The Consequences of Taking it Easy

Gaining weight is a subtle process. And because it is a subtle process you go into denial when your clothes get tighter. You don’t become fit overnight, nor do you get fat overnight. During this “taking it easy” period, I did not completely stop working out. I would casually sneak in a P90X or Insanity workout. And because I still “worked out” I thought I was going to be ok. Even when I started weighing more, I would convince myself that it was muscle. Besides, I’m a P90X graduate which makes me impervious to weight gain right? WRONG. After completing P90X Classic, I weighed 173 lbs. I was now up to 193 lbs! I had gained 20 pounds in a matter of months!

Bad News, I’ve Been Here Before…

I’ve been overweight before and I finally accepted responsibility for what I had done to my body. The starting point of change is realizing and accepting where you are and then deciding to do something about it. I was again unhappy with the way I looked and felt. I certainly didn’t want to break out my fat clothes again. Geez, how depressing is that? Putting away your fat clothes and then having to break them out again? I would be the worst P90X testimonial ever! On top of that, I maintained a fitness blog and wasn’t practicing what I preached! This made me feel worse than anything. I had to dig deep and make a conscious decision to change.

Good News, I’ve Been Before…

So I knew what it took to succeed. I knew that at one point, I had the discipline and dedication needed to change my body.  I just had to find a good reason that would keep me motivated and inspired. I came up with three.

  • I am the guy behind this fitness blog, I am responsible to practice what I preach!
  • I am a Beachbody coach and I want to take this business to another level. In order to do this, I have to be a good ambassador. This includes being fit and healthy.
  • Most importantly, I’m doing this for me. Jim Rohn, one of my favorite success gurus says, “To take care of yourself in order to take better care of others.” I know the importance of taking care of my health but it was dormant underneath my complacency.

P90X Works – My Action Plan

P90X works, no guess work required. The beauty of P90X is that it is a system. It is a proven system that has been tested time and time again. Not only is it a system but it is a blueprint to achieving heights of fitness that is difficult to reach without professional instruction or training. What did I do? I followed the blueprint again.

This time however, I wanted to place an emphasis not just on working out but on what I put in my body. I religiously incorporated Shakeology, Results and Recover Formula and the P90X Bars.

P90X Before and After

I’m back on track!  I got back down to a healthy weight of 175 pounds. I didn’t have to break out the fat clothes again! Nothing is more motivating than seeing actual results.

Healthy Active Lifestyle – What I’ve Learned

Not only is fitness a choice, but it is also a lifestyle. It takes constant dedication to eating right and exercising properly. This is why I admire Tony Horton as a Fitness Professional and as a person. He has chosen fitness as a lifestyle and has dedicated himself to helping others. The guy is like 50 now and is still ripped! That does not happen by accident but rather by choice. Tony Horton has created the blueprint to fitness with P90X. P90X works and I have proved it.

I’m nowhere near perfect and I struggle everyday not eat Cheetoes, but I choose fitness over complacency. Every morning I get up, I make a decision and choose to be fit. Every time I get up in the morning and exercise, I am choosing to be fit. Every time I drink Shakeology instead of a milk shake, I am choosing to be fit. Choosing to be fit happens in the moment. It happens when you feel yourself at a cross roads. The more good choices you make than bad choices at the cross roads, the better off you will be. It’s not easy choosing to be fit, otherwise everyone would do it.

I’m glad that I graduated from P90X, became fit, let myself go and then got back into shape. It reminded me about everything that I had learned during my personal fitness education. It also made it very clear to me that fitness is a choice.
