P90X Motivation

“How do you stay motivated throughout the 90 days of P90X?” I am often asked. I realize that many people have started P90X and have not been able to actually finish all 90 days. From my personal experience, it has little to do with exercise technique, diet, quality of equipment or anything technical relating the specifics of working out. To me, it was all about finding the meaning behind doing P90X in the first place and how the end results will make me feel. Stephen Covey, author of 7 Habits of Highly Successful people says to, “Begin with the end in mind.” Beginning with the end in mind and focusing on the end results is a great way to overcome the struggle you will face during P90X (or any worthwhile endeavor in life really). Don’t just think about it but close your eyes and give yourself the feelings of already accomplishing your goal. Looking good is great but I tied my desire to complete P90X to being healthier, having more energy, having better quality relationships, improving my discipline, excelling in business and sharing my experience with others. Efficiency Freak, Timothy Ferris of the 4 Hour Work Week says to, “Identify what excites you.” This is a good word. What excites you? It’s different for everyone. Take some time to get to know you.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself that might help you find a compelling reason for doing P90X.

  1. How will you feel when you join the ranks of a small percentage of the population who can start something and finish it?
  2. How will you feel when you look in the mirror and you are no longer ashamed to take your shirt off?
  3. How will you feel when you have to go shopping for new clothes because they are too baggy?
  4. How will you feel with you know that you have increased your discipline by sticking to a plan for 90 days? How else could you apply this discipline to other areas of your life?
  5. How will you feel when you get your first compliment from your friends, family and associates?
  6. How will you feel when you are able to share your story and help others with their fitness goals?

Action Steps

  1. Write these reasons down and make it visible to you. I carry a journal around that has all of my goals written down in it. Try printing our your goals out and tape it to your bathroom mirror. Find a way to remind yourself of this reason constantly.
  2. Measure your success. How do you know if you are improving if you don’t check? Use the P90X Worksheets and take lots of pictures
  3. Purposely find ways to inspire yourself. Read personal development or motivational literature, watch P90X youtube videos of people succeeding, hang out with other positive people, get involved with the fitness community etc. Bombard yourself with positive and empowering thoughts. This will have a compound effect over time and eventually thinking positively will become automatic.

I read a lot of books. It’s where I get a lot of my ideas and inspiration from. Here are some titles that have helped me in my journey to become a more effective person.
