Part of getting fit is keeping up a regular exercise routine. Disruptions can bring your progress to a stall, so make sure you keep your fitness engine running with some smart preventive maintenance. Knowing the stumbling blocks is step one. Practicing exercise smarts is step two. If you’ve already run into any of the stumbling blocks below, it’s not too late. If you’re buff and well on your way to maximum fitness, you’re engine is already running. If, however, you are a couch potato who day dreams about getting fit, here’s a little ether to get your engine running. The obesity rate in American is around 55 percent. Obesity shortens your life by 25 percent. Only 25 to 30 percent of all Americans exercise at all. It’s the number one cause of preventable deaths. Which group do you want to be in?

To make sure you become a positive statistic, set a schedule for your workout and try to stick to it. Don’t let others sap this time from you. Turn off the phone and ignore the doorbell. Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day — life happens. But never let one day stretch into days or weeks. Reschedule your routine to fit exercise in. It should be as important as taking a shower, brushing your teeth or going to work.

Try New Fuel

Exercise routines can get, well, routine. Change up your mundane routine with new equipment and exercises. Elliptical trainers are great ways to burn extra calories, working both the arms and the legs, keeping your body tone and fit. If you don’t have access to an elliptical, grab a jump rope. Pretend you’re Rocky if you have to. Jumping rope gives you a full workout, gets your heart pumping and makes you more agile. Jumping ropes are cheap, compact and work even in small spaces.

Keep trying different exercises, switching it up if you get bored. If it isn’t fun, don’t do it…do something else.

Preventative Maintenance

An exercise injury will stall any exercise engine. Bad injuries can leave you out of commission for quite a while. Crunches are great ab builders, but a lot of guys strain their necks doing them. If this happens to you, take a week or so off crunches until your neck is feeling better. When you start crunches again, use an easy trick to ensure proper alignment so you protect your neck from further injury. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth during crunches. This will help align your head properly to reduce neck strain. This simple trick makes your workout safer.

Feet hurt during workouts? Did you know that your feet are actually larger at the end of the day, versus the beginning? When your feet hurt, the body compensates in ways that put additional strain on your knees. The next time you go to buy shoes buy at the end of the day. Make sure you can wiggle your toes freely inside the new shoes. Replacing your shoes is easier than replacing your knees in the long run.

Keep that Engine Running

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. So put on those sneakers and get moving. The only thing you have to lose is the weight. With just a 10 percent weight loss, you experience a disproportionately high health advantage. You’ll feel better, have more energy, more self-confidence and the desire to keep it going.
