Myths & Truths About Acai Berries

It’s a rude awakening when you realize you’ve been had by a piece of produce. Perhaps no other fruit has been subject to as many false claims as the Acai berry.

This purple fruit, comprised of omega fats, amino acids, vitamins A, B1, E, proteins, and antioxidants, has become an alternative health phenomenon. Check out some of these myths floating around about the Acai berry and the truth behind them.

1. Myth: The Acai berry includes a far greater quantity of antioxidants than other fruit.

Truth: According to the Oxygen Absorbance Capacity number, Acai berry does in fact have the highest antioxidant level of fruit. However, many other fruits contain high levels of antioxidants too. These include blueberries and many other types of berries. Acai has not cornered the market on antioxidants.

2. Myth: Acai berries can make you lose weight.

Truth: While the berry may serve as an excellent dietary supplement, as fruits generally do, it cannot be expected to serve as the sole catalyst of weight loss. There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever to show the Acai berry can help you lose weight.

3. Myth: Acai can combat cancers

Truth: In 2006, a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry revealed that Acai berries, when applied to a cell-culture model, elicited positive responses in an estimated 86 percent of leukemia cells. While this is promising, more research is needed, especially since the fruit’s high antioxidant levels may conflict with specific chemotherapy drugs.

4. Myth: The Acai berry is available via free trials.

Truth: Nothing in this world is free; that includes the Acai berry. Use discretion and be wary of the promise of free or discount prices concerning this sought after fruit. Acai berries are expensive and unlikely to be offered in true no-cost samples as ads may suggest.

5. Myth: Acai berries cleanse the body.

Truth: With its antioxidant properties, the small purple fruit –in combination with a proper diet- is capable of ridding the body of toxins. The key is to moderate the intake of acai berries; high in fiber, a surplus may cause adverse health effects, such as diarrhea.

6. Myth: Erectile and other sexual dysfunctions can be treated by the Acai berry.

Truth: While such a claim is not scientifically supported, the fact that Acai has been used for centuries as a stamina improver and natural aphrodisiac in Brazil gives credence to the potential of the fruit. However, there are no studies to back up such claims.

7. Myth: Vision can be improved by taking Acai berries.

Truth: Anthocyanins, a chemical found within an Acai berry, is known for helping treat conditions such as glaucoma. Additionally, the amounts of Vitamin A contained within the fruit help remedy afflictions such as night blindness. However, no studies have actually proven Acai beneficial to eyesight.

8. Myth: The Acai berry can help manage diabetes.

Truth: The fruit’s high fiber content and proposed health benefits, including the lowering of cholesterol and moderation of the digestive track, may assist overall health, but there is no proof that it helps those with diabetes.

9. Myth: Acai berries can help combat the effects of aging.

Truth: Again, it comes down to the nutrients provided by the fruit; the natural antioxidant’s free-radical fighting potential may help skin maintain a more youthful appearance, if combined with other healthful regimes.


Personally I find Acai much too expensive. And we already have plenty of healthy foods at our disposal such as blueberries, walnuts, flax seeds, ginseng and more.
